Planning your engagement session is such an exciting part of the wedding process. It’s a chance to slow down, soak in this season together, and capture the connection that brought you here in the first place. One of the first decisions we’ll make together is where to shoot, and that location sets the tone for your entire session.
So how do you choose the right spot? Here’s what I always tell my couples when we’re planning their engagement session:
1. Start With Meaning
Before thinking about what’s “Instagrammable” or Pinterest perfect, think about what feels personal. Is there a place that holds a memory for you two?
• Where was your first date or proposal?
• Is there a beach, trail, or neighborhood you always walk together?
• Do you spend Saturdays wandering farmer’s markets, grabbing coffee, or exploring downtown?
Choosing a location with sentimental value makes your photos feel that much more you. And trust me, it shows.
2. Match the Location With Your Outfits (and Vice Versa)
Your outfit choices and the location should complement each other. For example, heels on the beach or a long dress on a muddy trail might not be the best combo. Think about comfort, movement, and the overall vibe you want to capture.
A few quick tips:
• Beaches, parks, and forests = casual, flowy, comfy shoes or even barefoot.
• Urban or city sessions = dress it up a bit—think chic outfits, bold accessories, and clean lines.
• At-home or cozy coffee shop = relaxed layers and your everyday style work best.
If you’re ever unsure, I’ll help you coordinate looks that feel effortless and photograph beautifully in your chosen spot.
3. Lighting Is Everything
As a photographer, I’m always chasing the good light, and the time of day plays a huge role in how your photos will look. I typically recommend shooting during golden hour (just after sunrise or just before sunset). That soft, glowy light is incredibly flattering and adds a dreamy feel to your images.
But light also behaves differently depending on the location:
• Open fields and beaches glow at golden hour.
• Forests and urban settings can get darker faster.
• Indoor locations (like cafes or greenhouses) need good natural light—big windows are ideal.
When we pick a location, I’ll guide you through the best time of day to shoot there so we can get the absolute best light.
4. Consider the Logistics
It’s not just about how pretty a place is—it’s also about how it feels to be there.
Ask yourself:
• Is it crowded or private?
• Will we need a permit or reservation?
• Is there parking nearby? Any walking or hiking involved?
You should feel comfortable and at ease during your session. If you’re stressing about crowds or hiking in formalwear, it’ll take away from the experience. I’ll help you choose a spot that fits your vision and makes sense logistically.
5. Need Ideas? I’ve Got You
If you’re feeling overwhelmed with options, don’t worry—this is where I come in. I know so many amazing locations (from hidden beach trails to quiet city corners) and I’m always happy to recommend spots based on the vibe you’re going for. We can even do two locations if we have time—like a cozy indoor spot followed by sunset on the beach.
Let’s Find a Place That Feels Like You
At the end of the day, the best engagement session location is the one that reflects your relationship. Whether it’s meaningful, magical, or just somewhere you feel at home together, the right setting helps your story come to life.
If you’re ready to start planning your engagement session, I’d love to help you choose a spot that feels authentic and beautiful.
Let’s connect, I’d love to capture your day!
